Scoliosis has varying degrees of severity, measured using a Cobb angle. This angle is determined by an x-ray, where lines are drawn from the most tilted vertebra at the top to the most tilted vertebra at the bottom of the curvature. The angle formed between these lines indicates the severity of scoliosis: the higher the degree, the more severe the condition.
Treatment for scoliosis should ideally begin as soon as it is detected. Scoliosis is a progressive condition, meaning it tends to worsen over time. Early treatment is crucial because smaller curves respond better to conservative treatments. As curves become more pronounced, they become less flexible and harder to treat. Therefore, early intervention can lead to better outcomes.
Smaller curves and younger patients typically respond better to treatment. Early and proactive treatment can limit the condition's progression, reducing the impact on the patient's quality of life.
Scoliosis progression involves an increase in the curve's size, leading to uneven forces and unnatural body positions, which can cause pain and dysfunction. Larger curves are more rigid and less responsive to treatment, making the condition's effects more pronounced and challenging to reverse.
In children, scoliosis often manifests as postural deviation. Severe postural deviation can indicate a more severe scoliosis curve, though this is not always the case. S-shaped curves may appear more symmetrical but still have significant severity, while C-shaped curves can cause more visible postural deviation even if the curve is smaller. Indicators of scoliosis in children include uneven shoulders, hips, waist, or rib cage deformities.
Children with scoliosis typically do not experience pain, so any postural deviation should be taken seriously as a potential sign of scoliosis. Parents often overlook scoliosis if their child is not in pain, allowing the condition to progress untreated.
In adults, pain is the primary factor prompting treatment, as scoliosis becomes compressive once skeletal maturity is reached. Gravity causes the spine to curve more over time, leading to increased pain and discomfort. While children's scoliosis can progress rapidly during growth spurts, adults experience a slower progression due to the constant influence of gravity.
Scoliosis treatment can be either surgical or non-surgical. Surgery is usually considered when the curve reaches 40 to 45 degrees due to the invasiveness and associated risks. Surgical intervention can decrease spinal function, affecting overall mobility and quality of life.
Non-surgical treatments include scoliosis-specific chiropractic care, therapy, exercises, corrective bracing, rehabilitation, and home therapy. These methods are often combined to stabilize and reduce scoliosis. Each degree of reduction in the curve helps prevent further progression and enhances spinal health and function over time. As the curve increases, the likelihood of continued progression grows, making early treatment crucial for effective management.
In summary, the severity of scoliosis is determined by the Cobb angle, with higher degrees indicating more severe conditions. Early detection and treatment are essential for better outcomes, especially since scoliosis is progressive and tends to worsen over time. Non-surgical treatments are generally more effective for smaller curves and younger patients, while surgical options are reserved for more severe cases. Regardless of the treatment approach, early intervention can significantly impact the patient's quality of life and long-term health.

A month ago, I overextended my right side while reaching upward. The pain was intense for 3-4 days and then gradually diminished. The pain is now localized in my lower back and right hip. It hurts when I sit, but the pain disappears when I walk or stand. Do you think this could be an issue with the SI joint, the piriformis muscle, or sciatica?

We understand traveling for treatment can be inconvenient. However, for patients who live too far to visit our Celebration, FL clinic regularly, we offer a specialized intensive care treatment plan. This program condenses the total treatment time but requires a much more intensive schedule while you are at our clinic. This concentrated approach is what allows us to effectively address the progressive nature of scoliosis. Once you complete this in-person treatment phase, you'll receive a personalized home exercise program to maintain the progress you make with us. That being said, if you would still like to look for someone in your area, you can visit their site: clear-institute.org/.

It's unfortunate that I hear more & more doctors say that scoliosis pain isn't much, if anything in children. Every case is different. Childhood & adult pain for me has been miserable. My scoliosis was caused by my right leg being nearly an inch longer than my left leg. They didn't figure that out until I was in my early 30s. The doctors thought I was lying about pain all through my adolescent years but my nerves lit up like an Xmas tree during MRIs with contrast. Bracing obviously didn't help, it just caused me more pain. The headaches, numbness & tingling are maddening. Chiropractic helped a lot, massage and tens units helped. Once they figured out that my legs were uneven, they tried putting a lift in my shoe, which threw off my spine even more since the damage was already done. After 20 years on pain meds (which I detoxed myself from) I've had minor surgeries: laminectomies, foraminatomies with little help. Finally a fusion at L5-S1 which only threw off my scoliosis more. What a shit show my life has been! At age 50 I am finally having a 2 day surgery in Aug to repair some discs & put in the rod and screws. I just want to be able to actually live. Tired of being in pain, staying off my feet and watching my children grow up from my bed. Love & prayer to everyone with scoliosis, I literally feel your pain. ❤️🙏🏼

I have been going to a chiropractor that also a scoliosis Specialists so they say. He fitted me for a custom brace, I ended up with the Providence night time brace which I never would have picked because I need something that I can wear 24/7 during the day I just use whatever feels good and makes it so on my bones don't touch because I'm leaning to the left 60°. I have good days and bad days where I'm more straight depending on how I put myself together in the morning. I was wondering if the brace is helping me or possibly hurting me in the long run I'm just a little confused. If the brace is considered a modern, he told me it was because he custom fitted me. Although I watched your video and you said the Providence brace was not a modern brace. I guess I would like a video on the Providence brace if that's possible and what type of brace to ask for from the next specialist to help me so I don't get the wrong brace again

A year ago, I noticed my hips, shoulders and ribcage were uneven, and a curve in my spine. I live in the UK, so went through the NHS to my GP first who seemed to have no clue and suggested I should gain weight so the issue wasn't visible. I was referred for an X-ray, but when I turned up to my appointment, the radiologist refused to go ahead with it because I don't really get much pain, just a little discomfort in my side, and they felt the benefits of the X-ray were outweighed by the risks given that the x-ray would be in the area of my reproductive organs and I am a 26 year old woman. I was then referred to a Physiotherapist, who saw me twice, gave me some core exercises to do and told me to come back if things get worse. As I said, I currently don't experience much pain other than a little discomfort in my right side, but visually it is very noticeable as I am quite slender. I worry that it will only get worse with age and I have not been given adequate advice on how to prevent my symptoms deteriorating. I feel that I will only get help from the NHS if the pain becomes unbearable and I obviously don't want it to come to that. Your videos are very informative, they have given me more information about this condition than all the healthcare professionals I have seen combined.

Does scoliosis make you tired? Cos I'm exhausted all the time.
Scoliosis can definitely contribute to fatigue for a couple of reasons: Muscle strain: The abnormal curvature of the spine can strain the muscles that try to hold you upright. This constant effort can leave you feeling tired. Posture and gait: Scoliosis can affect your posture and the way you walk. This can make everyday activities more tiring.
